Top 25 Sanrio Characters Ranked

Here is my list of the best ranked characters ever created by Sanrio.

Starting with their most successful character, Hello Kitty -- the list follows the ranking of these unique characters designed for a very special kawaii world. Sanrio has created a world building story full of these characters to keep us all entertained and fascinated for years to come.

Have you joined our world of kawaii yet?

1.    Hello Kitty

I wonder if Sanrio had first made another character that wasn't Hello Kitty, would that character be the ultimate popular character of all of Sanrio's history?

No matter the answer -- what can't be defeated is that Hello Kitty is universally liked by so many people. She is the kind of character that can be both cute and cool at the same time.

She's our favorite gal pal!

2.    Little Twin Stars

There really is something special about these set of twins. Maybe it's because they have similar humanized features and they are not an animal to worship.

Their background history makes the twins even more mysterious and full of fairytales. They're stars in the heavens -- with similar semantics that they appear like angels to us from down below.

And, who doesn't want fairytales? Royalty, rainbows, fashionistas and unicorns are what we like!

Can you really not see their potential for greatness?

3.    My Melody

There is no denying that My Melody can win as much hearts as Hello Kitty. It's why she has so much long standing power in the kawaii world. It doesn't hurt that she is always dressed up in pink colors as of this era. She's the epitome of kawaii.

4.    Pompompurin

Purin has risen up in the ranks very quickly and has caught my eye on more than several occasions. What a sneakly little fellow, isn't he? His collection line of series are so darn adorable that I want to grab him up and give him a big hug.

5.    Cinnamoroll

He was always in the background, flying around and covered in cuteness. You could say that he slowly came into his popularity by perseverance and it doesn't hurt that his tail is shaped like a cinnamon roll snack.

6.    Pochacco

Pochacco is old-school classics on kawaii. You can never go wrong with that chubby cute face. He may be a pup, but he sure doesn't look like an animal version and that's what special about this Sanrio character. He's a cartoon character that is quite adorable, don't you agree?

7.    Keroppi

He will always be loved for Sanrio's unique kawaii version of a frog. He is in essence of what represents Sanrio to this day. Keroppi is such a beloved character that you can't ever imagine not having him in your life. Every time you step in a Sanrio store, Keroppi will always be waiting to be discovered by new Collectors for all generations to come.

8.    Badtz-Maru

What can you say about this tough little fellow? Bad ass comes to mind. Someone playful and who breaks the rules all the time. This is what I think of this penguin character.

His character is pretty popular from what I hear and he is somewhat always upfront and center with the popular Sanrio character lineup.

Do you think snarky fits his character?

9.    Tuxedo Sam

Adorable comes to mind when I think about Tuxie. This penguin is the definition of cute. As one of the many classic characters enriched in Sanrio history, Tuxedo Sam has shown us that he still has power to draw in fans. He sure knows how to make his fans go gaga for his collection series.

10.  Chococat

Unlike Hello Kitty, Chococat appears to have a more of a cat appearance than his predecessor. It still has the cartoon personality features, but the character stands out from the rest of the other kawaii characters. This character's collection series always reminded me of a sweet play on yellow and brown colors. It really was a cute combination.

11.  Kuromi

I wonder how many mischievous escapades has she been into lately? As the cousin and rival to My Melody, this character is quite popular with most of the punk and goth scenes. Also, I feel that the character gives off a strong pop rock girly vibe. If I had to choose, I'd pick to have Kuromi in my corner to defend me.

12.  Sugarbunnies

These characters were so very popular that a Japanese anime series was developed. It's darn cute bunnies. Enough said.

13.  Pekkle

The Donald Duck version in a kawaii world, except that he's more of a cool jock or tomboy type. I never noticed this character when I was a child, but now that I'm older -- nostalgia comes into play with this character from my childhood memories. One of the main characters casted on the cute cartoon series when I was a child.

14.  Pippo

Why do I considered this pig as one of the best characters that Sanrio has ever created?

First of all, look at that round piggy face with the cute snout. Tell me that you can resist that cute character for long? Plus, I have searched through the many Sanrio characters created and majority of them that are not listed here-- are not adorably sweet in appearance.

15.  Hummingmint

As one of the newer characters, this pretty fawn has got to be one of the sweetest creation ever. The pastel play of light colors match with the girly vibe that it's going for and succeeding. It reminds me of young-at-heart in girly tones. So very sweet.

16.  Marumofubiyori

New generation of cute. What more can be said of this character than it screams of being cute? I see Sanrio has given the character a nickname as I believed not everyone can remember such a long name. When I pass this character, I'll have to cover my eyes from the temptations.

Ooo, so evil of Sanrio, right-- to make such cute characters!

17. Mewkledreamy

I never imagined all that purple would make me sit up and take notice of this new character. I love it! The color scheme of the new character collection series has me wanting that new plush. It's so hard to resist. Have you seen this new character collection? So very girly and sweet.

I want everything!

18. Hangyodon

It has come to my attention that this character is Sanrio's hidden treasure. Very cute, but in a unique way. It's different that I'm not used to seeing a fish as a character. It's very appealing, but I have too many characters on my list for collecting. Temptations are a killer.

19. Charmmy Kitty

This pet cat can be often mistaken for Hello Kitty if one is not up to date with Sanrio. As a stand alone character, the series collection is pretty-in-pink. Another girly collection that I have fallen victim to in the past. I bought this very girly yet fancy large handbag that I fell in love at first sight. I didn't care that it was not Hello Kitty. All it mattered that it was going to be mine forever.

20.  Spottie Dottie

This character is considered one of the least popular characters, but I always remembered it as being one of the main characters released in the Sanrio stores of the early 90s. I have never collected her, but it brings up such nostalgia memories of the good old days.

21. Monkichi

One of the more unique characters that Sanrio has created. It's set apart in colors that aren't in pastels. Another hidden gem for Sanrio on something different.

22.  Marron Cream

This character design has a pretty kawaii old fashion feel to it. The collection series so far stands out from pretty much all the other Sanrio characters. It's very girly, but unique in it's character.

23.  Wish Me Mell

A rabbit created to target young girls. Another character that has a girly vibe. I keep hearing "Easter" in my head when I see this character.

24.  Bonbonribbon

It's a pink rabbit with bows. Pink works in Sanrio's favor for most of their kawaii characters.

25.  Gudetama

A different kind of cute when I see this character. Can you call it cute? It's certainly not adorably cute. Is this a new wave of different generation of characters for Sanrio?

This concludes the best characters created by Sanrio.

ARCHIVE: List of Cinnamoroll Birthday Dolls

I wanted to compile a list of Japan's Birthday dolls. Since I have limited information, here is a list that I could find through the help of Collectors and online resources.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this is the year 2019 that marks the first birthday doll for Cinnamoroll. I will be keeping a list for this character, even though I do not collect this character. I admire this character and feel that he earned it's right as one of the classic Sanrio characters of all time.

Small Gift, Celebrating 50 Years of Sanrio Review

WHERE to Buy:

Sanrio Hollywood Boutique

A Keeper
This book is a must have for Collectors all around the world. It has to be one of my TOP favorite Sanrio books of all time because of the content inside the book. What better way to have a mini memorabilia of older Sanrio merchandise at the tip of your hands?

It might not exactly be the real products at hand, but the pictures are surely drool-worthy! The pictures of vintage merchandise have me coming back to reference any older products that I am searching for at the time. Plus, it is note worthy that the pages are printed in quality. The vibrant colors will pop out at you, ensuring that you'll appreciate the visual beauty of Sanrio.

One of the many reasons that this book is my favorite is because they have an introduction to the company and the owner. There are a few pages with pictures of past closed Sanrio boutiques that were up and running in the old days. Fond memories for some of the older generation, right?

There is a brief excerpt from a Hello Kitty fan, Maria Fleischman (HK Junkies). I wished that the book had more content on Sanrio Collectors, not just Hello Kitty Collectors. It would have made the book even more special if Collectors were featured.

Included in the book is a Character timeline poster that would look great framed in my Shrine room, but it doesn't look like it's easily detachable. What a treasure book that I now own. Happy Sanrio Hunting! Meow.

Friend of the Month Campaign

The Friend of the Month Campaign officially started on May 2016, where Sanrio would give out a free pin when purchasing over $30 of their merchandise. Each month, there will be a new character pin to collect.

The first character to kick off the FOTM campaign was the little black cat, Chococat. From there on, Tuxedo Sam followed-- along with Pippo. Every 1st of the Month is a surprise on whose next. Will it be one of your TOP 5 Faves or a pin to add to your collection as a set?

May - Chococat
June- Tuxedo Sam
July - Keroppi
August - Pippo
September - TBA
October - TBA
November - TBA

The Friend of the Month will continue onto next year. Who are you looking forward to the most?

When this month started, I did not expect to be surprised and delighted when I found out the character was Pippo. I never imagined that they would promote Pippo so early onto the game. This makes me want more Pippo merchandise asap. How can Sanrio tease us like this?! ;p

I adore Pippo so much. Tuxedo Sam was finally getting his turn in the spotlight and I felt sad that Pippo was being forgotten in the corner. Sanrio, please release some really cute Pippo merchandise. I need to start on some really cute Pippo collection. Don't forget about stickers and character shaped Sticker Albums!

Now, I am ready for next month's character surprise. Anyone wanna place those bets on the lucky character?

Character Cafes

In most articles that I read online states that all character cafes have a short life span.

I'm left to wonder if the food is at all worth the money spent. Again, are we just paying the price for a work of art?

Apparently, so --- because that is what attracting crowds to character based restaurants.

I keep wondering where lies the fault on character icon cafes? Is it the chef or the restaurant itself? Or even both? I thought character cafes would hire the best of the best? Wouldn't they have hired a chef with experience in creating beautiful food art like I have seen on Instagram? Why haven't they hired those individual baker artistes? How about mixing in a Gourmet chef?

If they can create something magical in the kitchen that satisfies both your tastebuds and beautiful art food, then wouldn't those repeat customers keep coming back?

You can read the article in full here or continue below.

Character cafes hit the town, but are they here to stay?

June 15, 2016 By Claris Ng

TO HAVE an adorable Pokemon face staring at you on your plate, your picture taken with a Pompompurin statuette, and a merchandise corner for you to grab souvenirs, all in one stop? Well, within the past two months, another three character cafes have sprung up in Singapore, with some making their debut in the region here. While some have said the food served seems more ‘Instagram-worthy’ than delicious, fans of these characters have lauded the overall dining experience. The question though is: Will the novelty last?
Here’s what we found when we visited five of them.
1. Hello Kitty Orchid Garden Cafe
Assuming an elegant and poised setting, white intricately-designed fences draw the perimeters of the 84-seater cafe, the interior is resplendent with lush green potted plants and symbolic purple orchids. The first – and only – Hello Kitty-themed cafe in Singapore opened on May 12 to a snaking queue that persists till today, its location being none other than Changi Airport.
Designed by Yuko Shimizu and subsequently recognised as a Sanrio character, Hello Kitty first made its appearance on a vinyl coin purse sold in Japan in 1974. It has since taken the world by storm – Singapore is the latest addition to the list of Hello Kitty-themed cafes around the world, which includes cities such as Seoul, Taipei, Hong Kong and Bangkok.
Setting itself apart from other Hello Kitty-themed cafes in the world, the month-old cafe offers locally-inspired dishes, such as wagyu beef rendang and orange sugee cake for dessert. In response to TMG’s queries, Mr Andrew Khoo, Chief Operating Officer and Director of Business Development & Operations of the Food & Beverage Division at ABR Holdings, said that this concept was introduced to “reflect some of Singapore’s favourite traditional local dishes and flavours”. He added that the company is constantly researching and developing new dishes, which will be added to the existing menu once every few months.
Some other dishes include: Big Breakfast Surprise (scrambled eggs and smoked duck slices) for $18.50, Kitty Goes Fishing (baked salmon with diced macadamia) priced at $23.90, and Rose Rose I Love You (orange sugee cake) for $17.50.
Ms Shelly Yong, 39, a housewife and a Hello Kitty fan, said that infusing local flavours into the menu added “more local appeal” and is something “symbolic for Singaporeans”.
.
But even Mr Khoo acknowledges the challenge of running a character-themed cafe: “Novelty will attract customers the first time round, but a consistent and elevated dining experience is the key to longevity”.
.
That novelty is helped by the Internet. Fiona Zheng, 14, an Indonesian currently studying in Singapore, said what drew her to the cafe was the outpour of photos on social media. “A lot of people post it on Instagram and my friends say it is Instagram-worthy,” she said.
.
Indeed, the hype on the Internet led Ms Emily Kwok and two of her friends, who were on a three-day holiday, to join the constant queue comprising some 12 customers when we visited. The 27-year-old radiographer from Perth said that they were not Hello Kitty fans, but wanted their share in the latest fad on Facebook and Instagram. She lauded the intricate design and ‘garden city’ landscape of the cafe, comparing it to the Hello Kitty outlet in Taiwan which she had visited before. “The setting here in Singapore is nicer, in terms of the layout. I like the garden,” said Ms Kwok.
.
The airport was picked for the world’s first 24-hour Hello Kitty-themed cafe, because “the airport never closes,” said Mr Khoo.
.
However, Ms Yong feels otherwise. “The location is weird though, it is not located in town,” remarked Ms Yong. She said that while it is convenient for residents who stay near the airport like herself, it is less accessible for others.

2. DC Comics Super Heroes Cafe
It is a dream come true for Mr John Teo, an avid superhero fan and the managing director of J.T. Network, who runs DC Comics Super Heroes Cafe at The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands.
.
The 10-month-old cafe houses life-sized figurines of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, a life-sized model of the Batmobile, with DC comics series posters plastered on the walls.
.
Fueled by his passion for comics and superheroes, Mr Teo fulfilled his goal of creating an “immersive DC Comics universe experience”, a place where family and friends could dine and hang out. For avid superhero fans, the merchandise corner boasts a series of limited edition items, the latest being the display of the original autographed poster for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
.
Mr Brandon Chu, marketing specialist of DC Comics Super Heroes Cafe, said that special menus are created to coincide with the release of movies by Warner Bros and DC Comics. The recent premiere of the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice film, for instance, sparked the creation of two new dishes, the BvS Batman Burger and BvS Superman Burger. Mr Chu said that the popularity of the burgers prompted them to extend the menu offering even after the movie was no longer showing in theatres.

Its signature dish, Batman’s Wagyu Beef Jaw Burger for $31.90, comes with wagyu beef and foie gras butter served in charcoal burger bun with the Batman logo.
.
The first superhero-themed cafe in Singapore has an interesting mix of clientele, depending on whether it is a weekday or weekend. Tourists make up 60 per cent of the customer base on weekdays, but 40 per cent on weekends. The remaining percentage are locals. “MBS is a landmark for tourists”, said Mr Chu, which “keeps us rocking well in Singapore”.
.
He is cognisant of the short-lived nature of such character-themed cafes, saying “the hard truth is they have a life span of less than five years”. This means that food and service quality remain the pivotal factors to “sustain as a usual cafe”. “Then, we don’t have to worry about competitors”, said Mr Chu.
.
To all Suicide Squad fans, you may wish to keep your eyes peeled, as an unique menu will be put forth in conjunction with the film’s release in August this year. The cafe is also currently in the midst of searching for a suitable location for its second branch, on top of plans to expand this concept overseas.

3. Pompompurin Cafe

The golden retriever character was first introduced in 1996, and subsequently ranked first among other Sanrio characters in 2015. A testament to its popularity, this prompted Mr Kawaguchi Kiyoshi, Managing Director of Create Restaurants Asia, to bring Pompompurin cafe to Singapore.
The brightly-lit ambience – attributed to its location next to the full-length glass windows and yellow painted walls – is one that catches the eye when walking past the 78-seater cafe on the fourth level of Orchard Central. Diners are greeted by the arch-shaped gate that assumes the shape of Pompompurin, followed by a statuette of Pompompurin and friends – a photo souvenir for fans, and four “Tomodachi House” which translates into Friends House, each featuring one of Pompompurin’s friends.
The third outlet worldwide following Hong Kong and Taiwan, Singapore’s Pompompurin cafe sees a persistent queue of one to two hours waiting time during the weekends, and approximately 45 minutes during weekday evenings. The queue usually begins at 6pm, said Ms Jovy Alcantara, 26, assistant manager of the branch. She added that customers are usually in their teens. When we visited on a weekday evening slightly before nine, there was still a queue of five to six customers.
Ms Wyncy Tan, corporate designer of Create Restaurants Asia, which operates Pompompurin cafe, said the cafe, which opened in mid-April, filled a gap in the Singapore scene – “the lack of the Japanese ‘Kawaii’ culture”, which instils a sense of novelty and nostalgia at the same time. ‘Kawaii’ refers to the quality of cuteness in the context of Japanese culture. Customers are usually fans who would take pictures of the Pompompurin-themed food and with the ‘treehouses’ and statuettes.
But even such novelty may wear out, said Ms Tan, referring to declining patronage at the three Pompompurin cafes in Japan. The Singapore cafe “strives to consistently introduce new items”, she added. Its menu includes Spaghetti Napolitana priced at $26.99, Everybody Gather Around Picnic Plate for $24.99 (includes eggs benedict and sandwiches) and Bagel’s Special Pancake Tower priced at $21.99 for dessert.
She is right.
Taiwanese student Ellen Howh, 22, lauded the cafe for its comfortable setting and elaborate design, but suggests a wider menu than just the six meals to choose from.

5. Pokemon Cafe

It has been two weeks since the official opening of the first Pokemon-themed pop-up cafe in town, and the queue hasn’t disappeared. When we visited on a weekday afternoon slightly after 4pm, we were greeted by a queue comprising some 20 customers – families with children, teenagers, and even a few tourists.
Temporarily occupying the premises of Everything With Fries, the temporary pop-up cafe located on the fourth floor of Bugis Junction will cease operations after July 31. This new concept of a ‘pop-up’ cafe is the first of its kind in Southeast Asia, following the success of the Pokemon cafe that opened in Shibuya over a three-month period early last year.
Manager Christopher Hobday said they had decided to introduce the concept to “try out how themed cafes will work out in Singapore”. The 28-year-old noted the short life span of character cafes, saying: “I don’t think it can last very long, as usually customers come only once. We seldom have regular customers, hence we decided on the idea of a pop-up cafe.”
Business has been brisk thus far. Mr Hobday said that during peak hours, the waiting time could stretch from 45 minutes to one hour, with about 30 to 40 customers in line. With a large majority of its clientele consisting of primary and secondary school kids, Mr Hobday said that customers he sees range from ages five to fifty-five.
Fans or not, the crowd flocked to the merchandise corner, taking turns to have a closer peek at the merchandise offered – and their prices. Some of the merchandise include Mega Mewtwo Y Plush toy priced at $48, Pokemon Cafe Limited Item Cotton Tote Bag for $20.22, and Limited Item T-shirts (Kids) for $28.78. Just by the entrance is a standing photo booth with illustrations of several Pokemon, where fans can don Pokemon suits to have their pictures taken.

Momo & Luxe

What do Momoberry and Sanrio Luxe have in common other than being Hello Kitty branded lines?

Both stores have closed down, Momo in Los Angeles and Luxe in New York. No longer rivals, they sure have become friendlier, don't you think?
What or whom do you think they are gossiping about now? :p

Starlight in Hello Kitty World

Do you ever think what it is like to travel to another world?  A world that doesn't exist in your reality, but in your imagination.

I'd like to believe that we can have two worlds: reality vs. virtual world.

I have found my virtual world in Hello Kitty World -- well, for the time being until something better comes along...

As I continue playing Hello Kitty World game on my iPhone, I've thought a lot about my progress over the last 2.5+ years.  In this game, you had to have extreme patience because the series decorations are released every few months. It was worse waiting for more land space because that seemed like it was released every 6-12 months.

In the beginning, I just collected decorations without decorating and ultimately at the end, my patience has paid off. While I don't have everything blueprinted, I have made a lot of progress to be able to show off my Starlight world.

My beachside isn't fully ready to be shown off, but a part of it is blueprinted

Left side of Hello Kitty Kingdom. The top left is still unfinished

Right side of Hello Kitty Kingdom

When I was decorating, I didn't have everything all at once. It was bits and pieces that eventually, everything came into place. When one part doesn't seem right or fit with the scene that I was trying to create, then I would start over until I was satisfied with the outcome.

Before I introduce my virtual world to you--

Close your eyes and immerse yourself into your imagination. Reach deep inside yourself and open that door to my world. Now follow my words as I tell you my story...

Hello Kitty Kingdom in Starlight is my favorite park so far. It has the mysterious adventure aspect of Alice in Wonderland and the beauty of apples theme running throughout the park.

At the entrance to Hello Kitty Kingdom, it is protected by a garden portal. Without a magical token, you won't be able to enter Hello Kitty Kingdom. You would just enter the portal and exit to the other side and would see only an ordinary park.

Now, if you followed the rules and have a magical token in your possession, then you would have exited the portal to step into an enchanted land. As you step forward in astonishment, you will look down to see that your ordinary street clothes have changed. You have changed into a Hello Kitty themed Alice in Wonderland outfit with matching shoes.

Shoes that seem to glow as you step on a card deck. If you wander astray, your shoes will stop glowing, indicating that you are going the wrong way and off your course. It doesn't help that the backdrop of this wonderful world is filled with fascinating things. Things like a huge pocketwatch that ticks loudly as you pass by, flowers made out of candy, trees that whistle a tune when a breeze flitters by and overgrown giant size mushrooms that seem so unreal.

Did you touch it? Look, your shoes stopped glowing. Was it worth it? Yeah, I did it, too, when I first came to Starlight. Yup, that giant mushroom is real.

After following the card of deck road, you will be stopped by a gate check. Double security in Hello Kitty Kingdom. Past the gate, there will be a Hello Kitty booth that will give you a map to the kingdom. Time to choose your path...

To the right-- is a rest stop with a Alice In Wonderland restaurant with a matching theme garden. To the left, you will be invited to Hello Kitty's home and be a guest to a Hello Kitty theme wedding. The bride and groom? The favorite couple, of course! Dear Daniel and Hello Kitty.

And, when you get to the castle, time just stops in wonder. Literally, time stops. Inside the castle is filled with everything vintage classic of Hello Kitty. Treasures that fill every room. In the center of the castle is a big showroom fit for a Queen. A throne sits in the middle of the room that is only reserved for the royal kitty.

Once you have finished roaming the castle and step outside, time returns to normal. Surrounding the castle are beautiful landscapes of garden. Protecting the beautiful garden is a magical Hello Kitty fairy who only comes alive when danger is present.

After you reach the end of the tour, you would think that was it, but that's not all. Hello Kitty Kingdom doesn't just end here...

Psst... the adventure continues beyond the magical Hello Kitty water fountain. The path will lead you to another part of Starlight that promises more wonderful sights. But, that story is for another time because time is money. I have to go back to reality and earn money to buy more Hello Kitty stuff for my collection. Until then... meow

To join the game, more info can be found here and here.
