Momo & Luxe

What do Momoberry and Sanrio Luxe have in common other than being Hello Kitty branded lines?

Both stores have closed down, Momo in Los Angeles and Luxe in New York. No longer rivals, they sure have become friendlier, don't you think?
What or whom do you think they are gossiping about now? :p

Sanrio Boutiques 2013 vs 2016

These days when I walk into a Sanrio boutique store, I could always find something cute to buy. It still surprises me to this day that Sanrio has changed for the better since 2013.

I believe it was sometime around after 2007 that I stopped entering their many Sanrio store locations here in the States. Maybe once or twice a year since then, I would visit one location to see if there were any interesting items to purchase. Usually with one glance around, I would quickly walk out empty handed. During those times, I was not interested in what they had been producing.

All I saw back then was too much bright hot pink and low quality merchandise. Maybe all their focus at the time was intended for children under 4 years old. Most children under 4 would know no better because they can easily be entertained. I would hope a 9-12 year olds would start to attain higher standards than what was presented to them.

Whatever Sanrio USA was thinking back then, you couldn't tell the difference from the fake merchandise selling on the streets to the actual authentic merchandise in the official store locations. Their designs were that bad.

Another disappointing fact that as the years went by, the other classic characters started to disappear one by one until all was left was Hello Kitty. In 2013, I was trying to find a nearest store to purchase a red My Melody plush, but soon realized that I would have to purchase one from an independent Japanese agent.

It seemed like back then, all the good stuff was in Asia

Things have changed since 2013. Now, there are different type of character merchandise available at hand to choose from. Presently, there are shelves of different characters like Pompompurin, My Melody and Little Twin Stars.

Recent Purchases

For the Better
Nowadays, my mood is different when I enter a Sanrio boutique store. The feeling of anticipation and excitement has returned. The Sanrio boutique comparison to a candy store feeling has returned, something that I thought would never feel again.

For one thing, better quality designs have returned and different style concept merchandise has been introduced with many various collaborations. Lately, Sanrio seems to be back on track with better products, but it seems like there are certain areas that can be improved on.

Sometimes, I feel like Sanrio can be better than what they are capable of now. I enter a boutique store and feel like the only things that I can buy are knick knacks and stationery, for the most part. Good clothing designs come and go. Plushes and figurines here and there, but no stylish decor to choose from. When I need to buy stylish or chic decor, I shop at Target or better quality stores.

I'm not always looking for pink and cute plastic stuff. I am interested in stylish+cute+modern/vintage+chic+trendy designs all in one. Something that would capture my eye.

Last year, Sanrio Japan seemed to start going on a different path because I bought some non-pink wooden desktop items. These were stylish and modern with a cute twist. I loved it.

The New Future
For some reason, I would like to see Sanrio boutiques re-invent itself to fit their customer's ever growing needs:
I do hope these boutique stores continue to add more changes like a side Sanrio cafe with comfy furnitures and more options for clothing, adult lounge area to relax and a small play area for kids. Maybe this vision is already in Japan.

Whenever I drop by at the location in Japanese Village, I get the feeling that this boutique store represents the future for Sanrio USA. Inside at the back there is like an open area with the walls decorated in art. There are clothing racks that you rarely see in Sanrio stores at the Malls. The Arcadia and Topanga location have some clothing choices, but not like a big selection at Little Tokyo.

I'm surprised that there are no gigantic statues or an impressive art display inside the Japanese Village location to attract photo ops. When I think of Sanrio boutique stores having a small cafe inside, I imagined it being filled with so much cuteness and the feeling of being transported from reality to a wonderland filled with dreams.

If I could enter Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, I would be in heaven. Who wouldn't be impressed at seeing a chocolate river, surrounded in edible candy flowers and edible landscape?

But, I know that kind of wishful thinking will never be possible in our reality. Anyways, things that can be added to our reality are lounge areas for both kids and adults.

Like this photo below from Instagram. Sometimes, a bored husband needs an area to crash for a bit while waiting for his wife to shop. Do you think some alpha males would ever want to step into a Sanrio store? I have a feeling that most guys out there would rather have their tooth pulled out than enter one.

For the present time being, I will continue to have a big smile whenever I leave a Sanrio boutique store because I feel like I scored many more treasures. Jackpot!

Ceramic Banks

While I may not showcase all my shopping hauls, here is a highlight for the beginning of this year: ceramic coin banks.

Ceramic coin banks are one of my top favorite things to collect besides porcelain and fancier stuff. Besides the design of it, the material is one of the most important key element in how I choose what to get and add to my collection.

Little Twin Stars

Tuxedo Sam

Pochacco

What I find fascinating is that I finally found coin banks that are neither too small or too large. They are the perfect size. These are perfect additions that will fit right in my collection of ceramic coin banks.

Now, all I need is to invest in a new and larger showcase...

Junolyn's New Year Resolution

Every new year brings us back to setting the time back to 0. We set missions for ourselves that has an expiration date until the end of the year.

Last year, my goal was to buy a Hello Kitty couch from Japan. Thankfully, I was determined to get it. That particular goal had been the same for the past 5 years. When it was first released, I knew I had to have it. Every year after it was released, I wasn't able to save up for it because I was too much of a shopaholic. Saving was not easy for me.

Somehow, between 2014 and last year, I managed to come up with the money for my sofa. Now with the new year, I have set another mission for myself.

New Goal: a Japan trip

For the year 2016, my new goal is to visit Sanrio Puroland before the year ends. As long as I am in Japan, I might check out Harmonyland, too. The Japan trip has been on my bucket list for such a long time and now, I can finally cross that off my list. First thing first, I need to apply for a passport!

Japan, get ready! This Sanrio Addict is ready to land in Tokyo!

Sneak Peek

Guess Who? ;p

Happy New Year, Sanrio Addicts!
I'm excited for the new year to reveal a story that has been brewing in my head for 5 years now. If you have been following me, you probably know who the main character is...  if you do, shhh!!

Day After Christmas

The holidays are the best because all the sales happen the day after. What better way to get your groove on, but to do your shopping in excitement of finding your favorite things half off from the original retail price. I did my after holiday shopping bright and early.

X-mas Window Display 2015

What I enjoy most from the holidays are the beautifully arranged holiday window displays. My favorite hands down is probably in Little Tokyo's Japanese Village. I think this Christmas seems more special because Sanrio actually gave us more Winter wear than ever before. One thing we never had were "Ugly" sweaters. The white My Melody outfit in the window display reminds me of a cute outfit to wear at a ski lodge.

While I drooled over the sweaters, I finally bought what I wanted all along: JapanLA's Little Twin Stars Varsity Jacket.

 Source: JapanLA's IG

I'm thrilled to get it for half off the original retail price. As soon as I touched it from the clothing rack, I could tell that this jacket would keep me super warm. The body part of the jacket is soft to touch, whereas the sleeves are made of faux leather. When I first saw this, I wasn't too keen on the the back design because I prefer white unicorns. It was only after I saw Kiki and Lala on the sleeves with mismatching colors that I found the overrall design fascinating.

I think what I like most about the jacket is that one sleeve color is different from the other. It's like a fashion color wheel of pastels. I might not always want to wear a pastel ray of clothes, but I'll make an exception for this particular jacket. In the end, I love the jacket even if I prefer my unicorns to be white lillied colored.

Christmas Nails

When I got my nails done with a Christmas theme, I never expected the results to turn out so good. My nails sparkle like Christmas time -- corny as it may sound. I feel like I am carrying around Christmas lights everywhere I go with the nails shimmering in red and green.

Preview

Ever since I got my nails professionally done by nail technicians, I have spoiled myself that I can never go back to painting my own nails for special occasions. I feel all pampered and girly after getting my nails done. It's a girl's right of passage to get all beautified.

When I see my nails so detailed with 3D art, I feel like I can't just put stickers on it. It feels like the real stuff is adding professional art rather than stickers. I guess it's my nail preference choice that has guided me to Marie Nails. I am always searching for the best of the best.

After each visit to the nail salon, I have realized that my nail designs started off very simple and progressed into a more detailed art design. A week has passed since my last visit and I am so in love with my nails.

Earlier in the month, I knew that my theme would be a red Hello Kitty Christmas nails. I loved my Halloween nails and wanted to have a similar design. I thought that having a full figure of Hello Kitty instead of just the head would be fascinating. I was right. I loved the Santa Kitties on my hand. Each in a different Santa theme outfit.

Shouts Christmas, huh? ;p

If you think about it, I have a present on my finger. It's ready with a bow on top. Here's to a very Merry Christmas this year. May your holidays be bright and full of laughter. Stay warm! XOXO
