Kittifying Up My Car

When I plan to kittify my car with a specific Sanrio character, it usually will take me a few years as I have to find the right design that I am aiming to present to the world of my love for Sanrio.

I started with My Melody first...

At night - lit up

When I melodified my car, I didn't have everything that I bought years ago. The matching pink My Melody iphone holder was in my storage and nowhere to be found because I have collected so much that I have lost track of it.

I bought a My Melody car gear shift cover, but it was too small to fit. I didn't realize at the time that Sanrio didn't make car decor for universal sizes of different car sizes. Lesson learned. Sanrio only makes decor for small cars like Toyotas or for Japanese brand cars.

I learned the hard way below...

Car wheel cover was 36cm length

Sanrio really should have made car decor to fit different car brands. Not only specific to Japanese cars. Hopefully, Sanrio is paying attention because I would like to try one more time to melodify my car, especially once I find my iphone car stand holder. Also, I'll be looking out for any new My Melody seat covers, floor mats, license plate frame, etc too.

I would really like to starify my car with Little Twin Stars. Unfortunately, fans of LTS might never see this happen because Sanrio only focuses on their two cash cows, Hello Kitty and My Melody.

Like I said before, Sanrio only makes stuff that are deemed "safe" and really cheap quality on most items. It's their reputation of the last decade.

For years, I have been accumulating the car decor to kittify it to the best of my resources. Seriously, years.

Head rest

Unfortunately, I do not have the pictures of the pink Hello Kitty car seat covers that is currently in storage. Nor, do I have picture of the pink Hello Kitty wheel cover, the smartphone charger, license plate frame, or the other Hello Kitty iphone holder. I have a feeling that the wheel cover and the seat covers won't fit a regular universal size car for modern times. I do not ever plan on getting a small sized Toyota. Ew!

The black and gold new car decor like the car head rest, windshield cover, and the new iphone holder stand are items recently acquired. They will match perfectly with my car floor mats.

And lastly, I will be kittifying my car with car door lights! Isn't it amazing what you could do to customize your car?

Have you kittified your car yet?

Pottery Barn Collaboration with Hello Kitty

This new collaboration has really surprised me, their harshest critic who loves their brand. The decor collection is a refreshing game changer.

Pottery Barn Teen x Hello Kitty
2018 Collection

Lately, I have been eyeing the competition, Disney, because they have seem to be coming out with better stylish Mickey and/or Minnie decor and clothing. Unless it's vintage, my Sanrio purchases have become less and less as most of Sanrio Japan's new releases are mainly cheap plastic desktop items. So, when I saw the collaboration release, I was actually amazed that the decor design was actually cool -- very cool, cool... if you know what I mean.

This bedroom collection showcases that Hello Kitty can be stylish, too. It's what I have been saying for years that Hello Kitty has the potential to be cool for adults.

It's a great start for a cool Hello Kitty bedroom!

My Sanrio Rating:  ♥ 1/2

Creativity of Incorporating the Character: 4 out of 5 stars
Overall Design: 3.8
Color Scheme: 5
Adult Coolness Factor: 4.5
Quality: 3.9

It really is all about the design. I always knew that someone can make Hello Kitty decor cool for adults and not be ashamed to show it off. With this collaboration, Hello Kitty has made an official entrance for the adult consumers to be able to own and decorate. This is a great start to all collaborations out there and can open new potential designs that can officially be called cool Hello Kitty.

Hello Kitty is usually seen as a character for kids only because all the decor that has been released never reached the cool factor at all. Compared to rival characters, Mickey has already reached the cool factor with Disney adult collectors because most of their decor doesn't make them cringe. Also, it may have to do with quality.

Without quality, you cannot have a great design.

I always believed that plastic makes the overall decor design have a cheap appearance compared to other materials used. I will always prefer ceramics, porcelain, stoneware, stones, fabrics, etc over plastic. If you don't believe me, set up a room full of mostly plastic decor. Then, compare it to a room from those professional decor magazines that don't rely on plastic for their design. But then again, their target base are adult consumers and not kids with no sense of maturity.

The reason that I cannot give this Collection a full 5 stars is because Pottery Barn designers did not reach full potential for Hello Kitty. This collection is refreshing and a game changer because no other decor company, including SANRIO, has officially made cool Hello Kitty decor.

If you design for a bedroom, then everyone knows the eye goes to the center of the room: the bed. The selected decor items are mainly accessorized around the bed. Subtle is great, but that doesn't mean that the bedcovers needs to be overlooked. I can't give a full 5 star rating if I am not 100% impressed.

I feel that the Hello Kitty bedcovers may be the hardest to achieve the cool factor for adults. Maybe with Hello Kitty, she will always have that childish image attached. Or maybe not. It's why I say Hello Kitty has big potential. After this Collection design, I am left desiring to push the envelope. Can you reach maximum creativity with Hello Kitty?

Time will tell. As for me, I will be buying most of this Collection. I have half of what I put on my Wishlist. I still need that bean bag. It's a MUST for this Hello Kitty Collector. Enjoy the collection like I will do in the future.

Halloween

It feels like it has been a long time coming with these few months flying by so fast. You would think that it was just recently that we celebrated the holidays and now, we're upon that time again.

Surprisingly this year, I have found myself feeling the holiday spirit even more so than the past couple of years. I want to celebrate and spread the joy. Whenever I hear festive music, my feet starts tapping away to the beat. It's infectious, isn't it?

Wait and see...
I'll get you into the spirit for this holiday season.

Trick or Meow
You know Halloween is coming when you see many stores decorating for the event. I'm very happy that Sanrio has decided to join in on the fun by releasing Halloween themed plushes.

My work desk kittified for Halloween

It would be even more amazing if Sanrio had gone all out for this holiday season with more Sanrio characters decor. I'm not talking about just plushes. When you decorate for a holiday, the average consumers do not depend on plushes. The options to decorate for the holidays are a wide range of different decor available to us. The exception with Sanrio is that they don't think big. Why depend on plushes to decorate? Is it a budget thing?

When I was decorating my desk, I knew these two little plushes was not enough, so I bought and added small black spiders. Now, I wish these little spiders had a Hello Kitty face in the front, along with other Sanrio buddie spider version friends. Little things like these would have made a big statement that "yeah, I'm a lover for Sanrio-- but, aren't these spiders the cutest-scary things that you've ever seen?"

Another thing that would have been different is a Halloween HK pumpkin like the one on my desk. There must be others out there with the mindset of "think outside the box" kind of deal. I just see too much dependence on plushes to decorate a specific theme. Whether it being a holiday or a "Not Married Anymore" theme party, there should be other type of decor that is fun and wild to buy from Sanrio.

Hopefully, one day Sanrio fans can decorate with more options available. I'd love to see how creative they can get without the dependence on plushes for decor.

Kittified Makeover Diary

Below is a blog post that I started writing earlier this year, but I kept putting it off from finishing the post. Here it is below with a photo of my kittified room half done.

Here's my story:

It's that time to start anew.  Every time that we start a new year, I think of a new beginning. A time to start afresh and welcome the new spring.

My new year consists of completing my room transformation project. From an ordinary and average room to a theme oriented room. I wanted what I saw in the mobile app, Line Play's kittified cartoon room.

Although, I didn't want it all just one character. My room was going to be all Sanrio themed. Well, for now that is...

For these past few months, I have been waiting patiently for the last final touch that will complete my Makeover Project. It's been a two year long project that seemed like it would last forever.

Now, I can say that I have succeeded in all my makeover plans because I have achieved the ultimate wish any collector can dream about... a Hello Kitty sofa. Not just any ordinary sofa that we're talking about here: a glorified Hello Kitty shaped sofa made for adult size. Not the kind of sofa where they sticked a Hello Kitty face on it and pass it off as the real deal.

My most coveted treasure to date

Also, a special custom made sofa that can only be bought from Japan and nowhere else. Imported all the way from Japan, my Hello Kitty sofa is another continuation of my Sanrio journey.

My Hello Kitty sofa is a game changer for my Makeover plan.

I could get by without the sofa and have displayed all my other coveted collections, but this sofa changes the playing field. This sofa is the coup de grace.

In order to emphasize a theme, you would need something out of ordinary to achieve the best result. What better way to do it than a Hello Kitty sofa? It's big, pretty to look at, pearly white new, and best of all-- you can't buy it locally. It's not something an average person could go out of his or her way to get.

As the months have passed with me owning this gem of a sofa, I feel like I am stuck in an ongoing dream. A dream filled with happiness and cuteness that surrounds me on a daily basis.

A dream that started when I became a serious full time collector. I wanted to see if I could transform my home without making an average person think that it was only a kid's bedroom or themed home. I wanted to prove that Sanrio decor can still achieve that cool effect.

To prove that Hello Kity isn't just for kids anymore. It can also be for adults. So, world-- embrace us, adult collectors, because we're not going anywhere.

My collection for display

What's next for my Kittified Makeover Project? You tell me, Sanrio, how far can this Sanrio Addict can dream...

Hello Kitty Fan: Singapore

Spotlight: Singapore's Connie Sim

Below is a video of one of the many Hello Kitty collectors out there-- specifically in Singapore. Her vast collection is something out of a fantasy world that even beats out Puroland's version because it's a kittified home to a T. It's like a shrine to Hello Kitty in every sense of the word.

And most importantly, it's kittified in style and elegance. Something that I have been searching as well when it comes to Sanrio's characters.

You can continue reading below or read the full article here and here.

Connie Sim's husband is giving a tour

Hello Kitty fan spends $1.2m on dream home

In food supplier Connie Sim's house in Katong, it is impossible to turn a corner without bumping up against Hello Kitty merchandise.
The entire third floor is covered in floor-to-ceiling wallpaper featuring the Sanrio character's face and name. A 3-D mould of Hello Kitty's face is replicated on all of her cupboards, doors and drawers.
Not to mention the hundreds of knick-knacks crowding every corner of her semi-detached house.
In communal areas such as the kitchen, you can see a Hello Kitty toaster, coffee grinder, juice maker, slow cooker and dim sum baskets.
Even in private spaces including the bathrooms, Hello Kitty peers out at you from toilet paper, toilet seat covers, soap and laundry detergent.
Madam Sim, a youthful-looking 60, says she spent about $1.2 million in 2013 on Hello Kitty-themed renovations. This excludes the money she blew on collectibles in the past 10 years.
Which is why her next statement is pretty shocking.
"I'm not particularly into Hello Kitty," she says in Mandarin. "I just like the colours pink and white."
For this interview, she is dressed in a red T-shirt with Hello Kitty faces and a black flared skirt. Her voluminous coiffure - blown into shape by her maid - features girlish bangs.
She elaborates: "I wanted my house to have a theme and since my friends like Hello Kitty, I decided I would have a classy, first-rate Hello Kitty home where everything looks fantastic."
It is clear that even in the world of Hello Kitty devotees - known for their obsessive collections - her home is an epic shrine to the cartoon cat without a mouth.
During a tour of the house, she takes the team up to her master bedroom, where she keeps Hello Kitty mobile phones, hair dryers, steamers, irons, and sewing machines.
"Some of these I've never used, but I just like collecting them," she says. "I don't ask the price. I just buy."
She gets her items from a supplier here whose shop she visits every month, but also regularly buys items from places such as Hong Kong, Japan and Taiwan, spending about $10,000 a year on her hobby.
The divorcee says her three children aged 40, 36 and 34 do not mind her spending on Hello Kitty. "They say as long as Mummy is happy, they are happy."
On the third floor of the house, Hello Kitty is plastered on cushions, carpets, fans, lights and cosmetic covers.
One room contains Madam Sim's Hello Kitty clothing collection, which includes at least 100 T-shirts, 30 sets of pyjamas and many pieces of underwear.
"I also have a Hello Kitty G-string," she says, rummaging through a neat pile of underwear in the drawer.
"Do you want to see it?"
After this reporter's polite refusal, she leads the team to the basement, where there are two Hello Kitty-themed rooms for karaoke and mahjong games. These are open to her friends and family members during gatherings, which she organises regularly.
Her rationale?
"If you've done up your home nicely, you cannot be selfish and just enjoy it yourself. I believe in being generous."
One of her friends, sales coordinator Linda Yeo, 39, says: "She first welcomed me to her home two years ago. I took so many pictures. It's like a Hello Kitty museum here."
Madam Sim says she has her fair share of naysayers - people who told her she is wasting her time or criticised her obsession with a cartoon character. But she respectfully disagrees.
"I'm not throwing money away," she says. "This is going to last me for many years, beyond the life of a million-dollar sports car."

Home of Singapore's biggest Hello Kitty fan ever

By Mavis Ang
This Hello Kitty fan got The Interior Library to customise every square inch of her home to match her overwhelming love for the Sanrio character.
Connie's favourite shop in Singapore to get her Hello Kitty fix is Kai Kai Gifts at Chinatown Point. She says Hong Kong and Taiwan are also places with great Hello Kitty merchandise - even better than Japan!
Her collection includes usable Hello Kitty kitchenware and cutlery. She even got a striped awning and clear window panels installed to complete the illusion of a streetside café setting for the kitchen.
The drawer fronts in the kitchen were tailored to match the European-chic feel of the space.
The master bedroom exudes a dignified air with grand gestures like the round ceiling alcove above and bespoke furniture.
The feline's face is even moulded onto the customised headboard of the bed.
Hello Kitty bath products like liquid soap dispensers are all on show in the master bathroom.
Quench your thirst at the bar, which also displays Hello Kitty pencils on the counter.
Tucked away in the basement, this music room has customised display shelving to organise Connie's big collection.

Kittifying Diary: Bed

Stats

Diary: Kittifying Makeover Project
Theme: Sanrio
Project Ends: March 2013

I started this project about two years ago when I was inspired by other Hello Kitty fans who showcased their transformed bedroom into a Hello Kitty themed room. I felt it was time to unpack all my Sanrio possessions from Storage and put it all on display. In this way, I have to get over my fear of keeping it in brand new condition.

With my collection, I was set in a sea of plushes, so I focused on searching for a decent looking blanket.

Unfortunately for me, all the Sanrio boutique stores could not help me with my project. I could not find any blankets that fit my taste of what did not scream "too kiddie."

Next, I tried eBay as my last resort and hit the jackpot. I found the perfect sized Little Twin Stars blanket that wasn't too small for my Queen sized bed. I was hoping to find a Hello Kitty version, but most other versions out there was not to my taste. They all screamed too childish or was a knock off made by another company other than Sanrio.

With my LTS blanket, I paired it up with a plain white comforter to emphasize on the light colors I was striving for in my themed room. I was in luck to find a matching color in a HK neck roll pillow (as seen above) on Sanrio Japan's official shopping site. I believe it was intended as a long body roll hugger, but I felt it would look better like a pillow with the Hello Kitty face peeking out from the bedcovers.

The final result with the plushes and My Melody pillow plushie...

Checklist:

☑ Blanket
☑ Neck Pillow
☑ Plushes

Kittifying Project Continues...

It's such a wonderful feeling to receive more Hello Kitty mail...

Hello Kitty 2L Plush

I needed this pillow for my Kittifying Makeover Project. Cute, isn't it?
Hello Kitty Die Cut Pillow

2010 LTS Cardboard Shelf Box

For a second, I almost thought I wouldn't be able to get this cute Little Twin Stars box because it was hard to find as everywhere else was sold out in Japan. Thankfully, I have a great ISA, who could get me this fabulous box. This box will be an excellent addition to my room transformation for my Kittifying Makeover Project.
