Sanrio Coin Banks

Besides plushes, I love collecting Sanrio's coin banks. Aren't they adorably cute?
(e-bay pics below)

7 Inches

9 Inches

Like many collectors, I have come to understand the fascination for coin banks/statues. You really cannot find these coin banks anywhere except in e-bay or in Sanrio stores. Though, big ones that reach 9" is a rare one in the sanrio community these days because Sanrio hasn't been creating and selling large coin banks since the 90's. Coin banks are one of the many things that I wish Sanrio brought back in their Sanrio stores across the country. I believe that Sanrio needs to go back to the basics of things that made their Sanrio characters so popular. If it wasn't for vintage items and e-bay, I would have stopped collecting Sanrio all together. It really isn't fun stepping into a Sanrio store and leaving with a disappointing feeling. I did that so many times in 2003-2008 that I eventually stopped visiting Sanrio for months. It's a pattern that is hard to break because I have lost faith in new Sanrio products. The only character that keeps me coming back is the Little Twin Stars. I'd have to say I have purchased more LTS than Hello Kitty when it comes to new products. With Sanrio, their Hello Kitty series is more like a hit and miss. Mostly misses, but a very few that are actually cute. Here's to much hope that Sanrio can turn their luck around and get back into the game of tuning out quality designed products.

Someone Must Be Crazyyyyyyy

.:: Bizarre of the Month::.

Check this e-bay post: For a Momoberry Plush (tiny size)
Absurd Asking Price: $4000 USD

Ok, I would like to know what this particular e-bay seller is sniffing because who would pay $4000 USD for a very small Momoberry Hello Kitty plushie??? (answer: no one)

Seriously, I'd be genuinely surprised if it did get sold, but wait, this is reality we are talking about... nope, chances are that plush will go down in e-bay history of "Wacky but True: What were the sellers thinking?!". What do you think about e-bay sellers like these?

It's always a favorite moment coming home to realize that there is a big package waiting for you to open... because that is what happened to me today. My 1981 My Melody sanrio plexiglass display came today and I'm loving it already. I'm already making plans to have it hanged on one of my bedroom walls, but first I have to choose a perfect spot.

End of March Purchases

I've been smiling ever since Saturday afternoon when I received these spiral notebooks (in the mail) from a great Hawaii sanrio collector...
picture provided thru e-bay

I have a small drawstring bag of this design as well

Plus, another reason I can't stop smiling is because I finally completed all the details on a big yet sweet Sanrio purchase that I hinted about a few weeks ago... hehe. I know you probably can't hear me, but I'm shouting my joy here at my cozy home.

Remember this post? (the last part)

Keroppi *balloon* Series Coloring set

The week is almost near it's end and the only highlight of the week is what I got in the mail: a 1992 Keroppi Marker/Crayon set with two pencils and a sticker sheet.

 Front

Back

^  At first I thought I wanted this e-bay auction item for just the two pencils, but I had not realized that it was not just a plastic case with unnecessary stuff (yup, I didn't really pay attention to the description) but a great and rare addition since I love the *balloon* series so much.

So, I am really happy that I got a chance to purchase and add this item to my collection.

Now next on the list of things...
Where in the world is my Momoberry plushie with it's cylinder box? It's been 4 weeks already. I don't want to whine, you guys, but I'm dying to get my hands on this plushie.

Sanrio Withdrawal Symptoms

This week I had to rein in control over my sanrio spending habits and it's literally making me go crazy...

Okay, I'm exaggerating, but you get my point. I'm feeling the S-A-N-R-I-O withdrawal effects.

Here are a few of my symptoms:

  • My fingers are getting antsy - to buy and buy! I'm wishing like hell that I own a credit card - it's why this sanrio addict doesn't have one because it'd be dangerous for me financially. Tip for Newbies: If you're just like me, then Cut and throw away your credit cards. Trust me. You'll thank me one day for this advice.
  • Resisting Temptation - Literally follow your monthly sanrio budgets! Once you stray from your monthly sanrio budget, it really is hard to discipline your inner sanrio obsession from getting out of control. Learn from this sanrio addict. Since I've strayed, any Sanrio item (whether it's new or vintage) that catches my eye, I've gone for it 100% - full force.
  • Feeling Very Restless - My sanrio obsession is like having a gambling addiction. You're constantly looking for the next sanrio purchase. I can't stay away from e-bay nor sanrio.com
  • Kitty on the Brain - I can't stop thinking about Sanrio and my brother is no help. He teases me about Hello Kitty when we go to Target because he knows I'm super picky with Sanrio. We once passed a Hello Kitty soap liquid dispenser and he pointed, "Hello Kitty" with a smirk on his face and he gets a pointed glare in return.

Here are two new purchases that I got from e-bay:
Again, pics from e-bay.

2000 Angel Hello Kitty

1985 Little Twin Stars Letterset

^  These two items should make me satisfied, but this sanrio addict wants more of my purchases to all show up at my doorstep now, instead of me waiting for the 4 week period to end. C'mon, magicians, invest in a time machine so I can fast forward to next week's Friday.

End of February E-bay Purchases

Here are a few sanrio items I won off of e-bay just last month...
(sticker pics from e-bay; too lazy to take pics of stickers)

1993 Hello Kitty Sticker

1989 Hello Kitty Sticker

1994 Hello Kitty Sticker

Below is something special that I won on e-bay. I bought it only for the Little Twin Stars eraser, especially since it's sealed in it's plastic as shown in the picture that I took just yesterday.

Every minute, every second...

Pretty so far, my week has been very good. I didn't expect to spend a lot of cash in my local Sanrio store. Bet Sanrio had planned all this ahead of time: target sanrio addicts who love plushes! Especially bright fun loving colors like yellow to get in the mood for Easter. I bought my 12" yellow baby chick with clear plastic gift wrap and it's sitting on top of my desk hutch, waiting for me to unwrap it. I'm thinking of keeping it in it's cellophane and leaving it out for display. Really adorable.

Other than my excitement for my new plushes, I've been waiting for some sanrio purchases that I am expecting in the mail. When you buy from international sellers, waiting for mail can be a killer. Especially the cheap 3-4 week waiting time period.

Good thing, I got this below to temporarily appease me for a while before I go crazy with impatience for my next new purchase. I love vintage Hello Kitty...

What a lovely addition to my HK notebook/pad collection

End of the Week E-Bay Purchases

This week is an exciting one for this sanrio addict!

I won two great vintage items that are now added to my many sanrio collection: a vintage sealed Little Twin Stars sticker and a Hello Kitty Vintage School set.

I haven't yet taken a pic of it, but this is another piece I have that is not sealed.

Vintage 1984! All mint unused!

Inside. What a great treasure for this sanrio addict!

Be Xtra Cautious with International Deals

One thing I get my info are through my experiences and through the grapevine. Just recently, I gained another bad experience when dealing with another Italian seller.

I know not all sanrio sellers from Italy have a bad reputation as a seller, but foolish me, I decided to trust another one and thankfully, I got my money back, but it took me two and a half months to figure out that this Italian sanrio seller wasn't going to mail the sanrio item that we had agreed upon.

The deal was set through Flickr, which I have never done before. Note to self: Never try that again. If I ever think about making a deal thru flickr, please someone give me a swift kick!

Seriously, Hello Kitty makes me throw caution in the wind. I need to work on that flaw.

What I don't understand about these sellers who makes transaction deals and never complete their end of the deal. If the seller sold the item to someone else, then why can't they just send back a refund without a buyer having to open a paypal claim and to demand back the refund. All I know is that she wasn't going to give me back my money if I hadn't threaten putting her name out there to the HK community. What is wrong with these kind of people??? If you've been in my shoes, did you get back your money? Or did you give up and stopped e-mailing that person who cheated you? If yes, didn't that make you mad as hell? My crummy seller wanted a buyer who gave up so she could keep the money. There really should be a list somewhere that the Sanrio community can go to see which International sellers have a bad reputation in keeping their end of the transaction.

::SIGNS to Look Out for Deal Breakers::

  •  Seller doesn't e-mail right away... it takes weeks before you get a reply. Like a delay tactic. If you don't file a paypal claim within 45 days of the transaction, you lose your money
  •  Seller claims to mail it soon and will send another e-mail -  which seller will never do
  •  Lack of apology or any apolegetic attitude
  •  Messages are very very short. Like one small sentence. No explanation on the hold up - nothing.
  •  # 1 : Silence. No e-mails, no contact!

End of January E-bay Purchases

More stuff won from e-bay...

Vintage LTS Eraser

Vintage Pochacco sticker

Vintage band aids

^  I'm still waiting on Sanrio to bring back stickers like shown above. The newer stickers are pretty cute, but mostly are too small. Maybe Sanrio is trying to sell small- teeny weenie stickers for people who like to put their sanrio stickers on their cell phones/notebooks... that's my only guess.

Even More Sanrio

Update on yesterday's post
--------------------------------------------------------------

The new 2010 Hello Kitty plushes come in different sizes: tiny size, small 6", and on Sanrio's USA website, there are 10" and 18".

^  I'm really tempted to buy the 18" version and use it like a pillow. I'd finally put a Hello Kitty plush into some good use. I'd probably buy the blue one rather than the all pink one.

Spent Way More on Sanrio
As you would probably guess, Saturday's shopping spree wasn't my only purchases. This week, I have won several sanrio auction lots off of e-bay. As you guess it, all except one item are vintage.

 *Bears* series!!!

2001 Pochacco letterset. Not vintage... yet.

I only buy the full set of stationary, which includes sticker as well.

I love you, Pochacco!

Renter's Insurance

If you live in California, you already know about the wild weather condition we are currently having. If not, where I live we are currently on the tornado warning weather look-out. Wait- in California??? Yup, that was my reaction still at this very moment. But, I think with the global warming, I really shouldn't be surprised. You only see worst case scenarios in movies, but to actually happen in real life, makes things scarier.

I live in one of the big areas where there is danger of earthquakes. Tornadoes maybe someday. I just wish I didn't have to live with another danger (i.e. tornado) added to the list of natural disasters. I think the smartest move is to think ahead and get renters' insurance for my place... which, incidentally, I had to buy anyways since my apartment's mandatory new policy is to get renter's insurance.

Even though renter's insurance can cover nearly all the expenses of damaged or loss items, it still does not cover over the emotional loss of my sanrio collection - if it ever happens. *Knocking on wood*
With so much hard earned money that was put into my sanrio collection, there could not be enough money to cover the time spent on building and loving my collection. Most of my collection are vintage and cannot easily be replaced more than others. I wish I can create this bubble of protection over my personal sanrio collection and not worry that I might lose it someday to some horrific natural disaster or fire. What a nightmare for this sanrio addict, huh?

My collection reminds of me of why I first got my first full time job... and the motivation behind it was to keep enabling my sanrio obsession. I've had temporary jobs that made me some nice chunk of money to add to my savings before I discovered my Hello Kitty obsession. It was during that time that I didn't know what to do with all the money that I have saved and at the same time, I remembered my burning hatred (ok, slightly exaggeration of the word hate) for my childhood friend, who stole my Hello Kitty sticker book album and several sanrio pieces of pens/pencils/ and erasers.
SIDE STORY: Have you ever had that kind of friend who stole behind your back? I regret being so trustful of people like that. Since then, I've always wanted to get in contact with her and demand my HK sticker album back and any others she stole. I was a still a kid back then to not know what had happened until a few months down the road, but then it had been too late already. That so-called friend had the audacity to show off my stolen HK sticker album in school during recess in front of our friends. At the time, I had no clue that it was mine and had been hurt that she wouldn't let me see it. It should have been the biggest sign that the reason she showed it to everyone else but me was because she had something to hide. I'll never make that mistake ever again. When visitors come, I now pay attention and never leave my important sanrio stuff out in the open for it to be snatched up and put away in their purse or handbag when your back is turned or when you leave the room. Marjorie Yolanda Lopez of the Valley, if you're out there, be ashamed!

Ok, back on topic: I wanted to replace the Sanrio Hello Kitty stickers she stole, so I went on e-bay and started buying many stickers. And before long, my sanrio obsession took off and knew in order to earn money to buy all these sanrio won auctions, I had to get a job. And, I got my first serious full time job, which helped me feed my sanrio addiction. I hated waking up early in the morning, but feeding my sanrio addiction was more important and I literally was living off paycheck to paycheck. There are times I wished I had started my obsession ten years earlier, rather than a few years back.

*Probably/ most likely an absurd request*- If someone knows Marjorie Yolanda Lopez who went to Van Nuys High in 1999, please send me her contact info: I'd really like my sticker album back*

Pochacco collection

More random pictures of my sanrio collection:

I think I love Pochacco more than Keroppi... sometimes, I think. It's why I am not sure between Pochacco or Keroppi on which is my 2nd favorite sanrio character to collect.

Enabling Your Sanrio Addiction

Okay, I'm the type of a person who likes to makes so many lists.  Below is my version to getting a sanrio addiction. If you don't want to become a sanrio addict, please stop reading today's blog.

I did warn you!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Five years ago, I was a newbie when it came to being a collector and buying online, especially on e-bay. This is my long journey as a sanrio collector who had wished that I knew the information below ahead of time.

When I first began to shop on e-bay, I had no idea that I would learn the tricks of auction lots. I have come up with some tips to keep in mind when starting your own sanrio collection.

Begin by focusing on what types of items that you will be collecting. Examples are desktop items (pens, memo pads, etc.), plushes, figurines, stickers, coin banks, chest/ jewelry boxes, and etc. Remember to collect things you will love for eternity. Don't get caught in the hype of people's obsession and excitement of showing off their collection. Don't get into collecting a type of item to fit in with the hello kitty/sanrio crowd. It's best to be a leader than a follower.

If you're going to collect everything, then keep in mind the cost and the space you will store this in. Are you buying these things to use or are you a collector who likes to collect mint condition items that you'll keep stored away in bubble wrap until you can someday put it all on display? Sometimes, sanrio collectors will prefer buying small things like small plushes because they have limited space. Other cases like me, I will make room for all my collection (even HUGE plushes). I literally work hard to make everything fit into tiny spaces. Another thing to keep in mind, place a budget on your sanrio spending. Since you can't buy everything that you want, prioritize what you want first then follow it up with which one will get sold out first. Another main factor in deciding what kind of collector you are depends on whether you will use your collection or keep it in their original unopened packaging. Collectors like me buy double copies all the time. One to use and the other to keep. Every collector knows that if keeping an item unopened and stored safely, then chances are that item will be very valuable one day in the far far future. In a couple of years, you might grow out of your collection and decide to sell it off. Sometimes, it's a very good thing that one is a pack rat or else your collection wouldn't be so valuable.

Now, after considering all above, what type of sanrio collector are you?

Before I forget, when I say "valuable," I mean sanrio designed line/series items that are in high demand on a collector's wishlist and most likely, hard to find. Most times, it's vintage items (vintage means more than 20 yrs., not in the last 5-10 yrs.).

Here's some e-bay tips:

1. Spotting Sanrio Fakes.
There are a lot of e-bay auction ads/lots claiming to be authentic sanrio items. Look at the title first. Most auction ad title will include "Sanrio." It's more suspicious if the ad does not mention sanrio anywhere in the description or title. If the item looks weird, then go with your gut instinct that this is a fake sanrio item. Personally, I saw one seller saying it's "san Rio." Not sure if it's a typo, but I avoid that particular seller and almost all the time, my sanrio e-bay transactions go smoothly. Another thing to look out for are things that look like a clear hello kitty sticker was pasted on some plain product. A few times, I saw a seller selling a stainless steel canister with a hello kitty picture sticker pasted in the middle. I don't know how any sanrio collector can be dumb enough to think that's not a fake. Sometimes, as a sanrio collector, I'm disgusted by sellers like that. It's a waste of space and adds to the number of so many fake hello kitty ads that are out there.

Here's an example of a fake sanrio item that is on e-bay:

^ Five years ago, I made the mistake of buying this sticker thinking I would receive an actual sanrio product, when in fact it was made from a fan. Seriously, NO. Back then, I couldn't distinguish the fakes from the real ones until I've seen other sanrio collections and started to notice the differences. It always helps to ask another sanrio collector for help if it's fake or not.

::Fake Plushes::
UPDATE 12/9/09: Thanks to Arista from NY
Here's another good tip to look out for:
Look for the Sanrio tag on the plushie's back or bottom. Fake ones do not have the fabric tag. I have looked for this on ebay photos or asked sellers to send me a photo of this. Also, I ask what year it says on the Sanrio tag. If they cannot tell me the year and show me the fabric tag, I will not buy. Good sellers go out of their way to prove that their item is real. A cardboard tag is not enough. I got duped once and bought a small plush with a cardboard tag but it was a photocopied Sanrio cardboard tag! So always look for the fabric tag on plushies!

2.  An auction ad that has very minimal description is a BIG warning sign that the item in question might possibly be very used and sometimes, something is broken. Always ask questions when you come across that does not give the condition or flaws. Some e-bay sellers are very slick in saying it's a collectible with pretty words to cover up from actually mentioning the condition. These type of sellers hope you don't ask any questions so they can make a quick buck.
My personal experience: I e-mailed this one sanrio seller asking about the condition of the item and he/she responds back saying to read their description... which the ad had barely any details on the condition. When the seller responds like this and is NOT VERY helpful, that is a big sign to be suspicious. Since I was new to e-bay at the time and thinking since the seller had a high feedback score, I went ahead and bought the item. Boy, was I wrong! The item was very USED and with the "slick" trick of not mentioning any flaws, I paid too much money for something I thought was supposed to be in better condition.

3. Beware of No Picture provided on auction ads.
An auction lot that has no picture means the seller is selling something to cheat you out of your money. So, don't buy anything without a clear picture provided! Blurry pictures are also something that sellers will use as an excuse from actually telling you the flaws. This is another slick trick in getting around from saying the item is used. Their excuse when you find out the flaw or that the item is used is that they provided a picture, but their weak argument fails because the picture is blurry and not clear. Don't let them get away with that trick! Most sellers never apologize for that trick.

4. Be suspicious if sellers do not accept returns. Minimal description and no explanation of condition PLUS "no returns" means something is wrong with the item.

5. The higher the star feedback the seller has, then the more likely chance that your transaction will go smoothly.
Be sure to check on the sellers' feedback before buying or placing a bid. It is very important to read the recent negative feedback because it will help you make a decision on whether it's a risky business to buy from this seller. As a sanrio potential buyer, you have to be aware that having 20 star positive feedbacks won't mean that the seller will complete the transaction. If the sanrio item is in demand, there have been cases where the sanrio seller would take the higher offer and leave you, the buyer, with no item in the mail. There won't be any contact to let you know it's not coming or to give you a refund. Most times the seller will leave you to do all the hard work and file a claim. I recommend never buying from a seller that has no star yet or any feedback less than 20.

6. Be very careful buying from International sellers!
If you want tracking for international packages, then be prepared to shell out a lot for shipping and more importantly, don't forget to ask the seller to include tracking! The international seller can get away with cheating you out of your money. Most times, paypal cannot fully recover the funds from a placed claim. It takes weeks for the whole claim to be completed and processed. Inside Tip for newbies: Try to avoid international sellers from Italy with 0-10 star feedbacks. From the grapevine, I heard there are a few Italy sanrio sellers who have come to have a bad reputation as a bad seller.

Unless you really know your way around e-bay, it is easy to find good international e-bay sellers. Plus, there's always the sanrio grapevine full of collectors, who can give you a lot of seller recommendations. All you have to do is ask.
